Story

Working with our Client to bring added value and diversity to a mixed-use site, we have prepared pre-planning designs for a new-build care home, with specific attention paid to the requirements of residents with dementia.

The site is nestled in a predominantly residential area on the edge Gillingham and is surrounded by mature landscaping and woodland. The scheme provides 70 ensuite bedrooms over three storeys, alongside generous amenity and relaxation spaces and nursing centres.

The site’s position and orientation provides outstanding connection to nature, a vital component in creating a enriching environment for residents. Benefiting from a leafy, suburban location, all residents’ rooms will have clear views to nature and the health and wellbeing benefits these bring.

The development provides a large, south-facing, enclosed outdoor space, providing the opportunity for lawned and sensory gardens, seating and space for activities such as gardening – all of which provide enjoyment and stimulation, in a calm, peaceful setting. It is proposed that daylight is maximized through large windows, framing views to the surrounding mature landscape. The proposals have been designed to minimise disturbance and retain as many mature trees on-site as possible.

The proposed development has been designed with the particular needs of dementia patients and their families in mind. The floorplans are designed to aid the visitors’ and residents’ ability to navigate the building easily, through simple layouts and arrangements which maximise visibility and avoids overly complex routes. Building access and communal spaces are located centrally, to encourage interaction and reduce any sense of isolation.
